Starting from Scratch

Been a while a?

So since the release of TetRogue Alpha 6 I've been working on all kinds of things including Legend of Snookerton, Bubble Frog: Spike Arena, Loopy Larry DX, and even an asset pack containing 180 enemies for JRPG Battles!

All this but no TetRogue Alpha 7, why?

Well to be honest, TetRogue was a total nightmare behind the scenes. It was built using tutorials never meant to be scaled up, and the whole thing was cobbled together with the plan to use it to attract a programmer who may wanna work on that side of things while I worked on design and art.

As a result adding a single shape to the game involved programming all 4 rotations of the shape, adding the block sprite to an already oversized sprite atlas, manually adding the shape to the Mutation Window, and manually programming that button to unlock the shape. And that's just adding a single shape!

The whole thing was a mess and it resulted in me doing anything but working on the game.


UNTIL YESTERDAY!

I finally bit the bullet and scrapped the whole thing! I've begun from scratch, using the skills I've gained from the projects that came after Alpha 6 and already I'm almost caught up with where TetRogue Alpha 6 was but now everything is future proofed. Now I only need to program a shape once, then it is automatically added to the Mutation Window, all rotations are done by the game its self, and each shape has its own metadata that controls how it works, where it shows up, and so much more.

On top of that the clean start let me build from scratch a bunch of the systems. This has resulted in new features being possible like a ghost to show where your shape will land, a new addition to the scoring system (drop a shape from higher up to get more score), and even allows for more modes!


In 2 days the games already basically back to where it was, another day and it should basically be Alpha 6!

So when will Alpha 7 be out? No idea! I'll be honest, I don't even know if there'll be an Alpha 7. I may release a polished demo and then push right onto the first 1.0 candidate!

What does a 1.0 Look Like in the new plan?

- 50 Unique Blocks/Shapes to "enjoy" (some are pure evil)

- Classic Mode which only uses classic tetrominos

- Chaos Mode which only uses mutation shapes

- Multiplayer (local only but I wanna make sure it works with Steams Play Together system for online play)

- Power Ups and Unlockables (including the 'Ion Cannon', 'Antimatter Bomb', and more! - more info on these soon)

- Hats for Tet

How long will all this take? No idea! The new build is waaaay quicker for me to work on but there's some areas I'm clueless about so expect these to slow me down!

But I do wanna get this game to a finished product sooner rather than later so hopefully this won't be the last update for 3+ months again like last time!!!


Anywho, I better get back to work!

Glad to see cool updates like this! Starting over was the right move, though not an easy choice. I like the art direction you’re headed in too.
